WHAT MAKES STAINLESS STEEL RESIST RUST

Throughout the history of humanity, steel has been an important metal. Steel's strength and lightness made it popular in the past. However, it had one serious flaw: rust was an unbeatable enemy. Stainless steel’s remarkable corrosion resistance ushered in a new era of innovation and design over a century ago. Stainless steel plumbing with the availability of stainless steel, manufacturers and builders can create a wide range of products and structures without worrying that the metal will rust. Even marine and other extreme environments are suitable for some stainless steel alloys.

WHAT MAKES STAINLESS STEEL CORROSION-RESISTANT?

In contrast to regular steel, stainless steel is believed to have a high resistance to the environment, but evidence indicates that alloying agents are actively interacting with the surrounding environment. Rust is prevented from forming due to this reaction.

Chromium is an alloying agent in stainless steel plumbing fittings. There is approximately 10.5 percent chromium in stainless steel, but only 1.5 percent carbon. By using alloying agents such as chromium, carbon steel can be effectively protected against rusting. In stainless steel, alloying agents such as chromium and molybdenum combine with oxygen in the air or water to form an oxide film that is thin and stable.

It forms a protective layer on the metal's surface that protects it from corrosion and more visible corrosion such as rust. Iron content in the metal is preserved by the presence of a barrier that stops oxygen and water from coming into contact with it. As the film is so thin, it cannot interact with light waves, and it may only be visible to modern instruments. Consequently, the metal retains its aesthetic appeal and gives the impression that it is "stainless."

It is because the protective layer is not something that has been added but rather is a property of the metal that it will quickly react with the air or water to form a new protective layer when it is scratched or damaged. As a result, stainless steel stays in good condition
